FADE IN:
EXT. SMALL TOWN OKLAHOMA – DAY - 1933
SUPER: “Waterfront, Oklahoma 1933”
FLORA DUPLAY-HILL, 13, blonde hair styled in long curls, WALKS down the street. She STOPS to admire something in a drug store window.
BONNIE PARKER, 23,4’11” with red hair, STEPS out of the drug store. While trying to open a pack of Lucky Strikes cigarettes, she DROPS the small brown purse she is carrying. She KEEPS WALKING not realizing she has dropped the purse.
FLORA DUPLAY-HILL WALKS over and PICKS UP the purse.
FLORA DUPLAY HILL Excuse me, ma’am, but you dropped your purse.
BONNIE PARKER (turns to look at her) Oh, thank you. Wasn’t that awfully sweet of you? What’s your name, honey?
FLORA DUPLAY HILL (smiles) My name’s Flora DuPlay, ma’am
BONNIE PARKER (takes the purse from her) Well, Miss DuPlay, I’m Bonnie Parker, It is a pleasure to meet you. How old are you, honey?
FLORA DUPLAY HILL I’m 13, ma’am.
BONNIE PARKER I bet you drive all the boys crazy with those blond curls.
FLORA DUPLAY HILL (embarrassed) No, ma’am.
BONNIE PARKER Well, I bet you will.
A sheriff’s car DRIVES slowly by. BONNIE PARKER LOOKS at it, concerned.
FLORA DUPLAY HILL (sees the car, too ) That’s Sheriff Kelly. He’s going to lunch at the diner.
BONNIE PARKER (looks at Flora) Really? And where is this diner, Flora?
FLORA DUPLAY HILL (points) It’s down the street about two blocks.
BONNIE PARKER How long does it take the sheriff to eat lunch?
FLORA DUPLAY HILL My mama says Sheriff Kelly can eat enough for ten people, so he takes a long time.
BONNIE PARKER That so. Well, Miss Duplay, it seems you’ve done me a great favor today.
She EMPTIES her purse. She PULLS OUT a little silver change purse, a make up mirror, and a whiskey flask. She TAKES a silver coin from the change purse and DROPS it into the now empty purse.
BONNIE PARKER (hands the purse to Flora) This purse is very lucky. I’m going to just go ahead and give it you, and every year on this day. (pauses) It’s August 1. Isn’t it?
FLORA DUPLAY HILL NODS.
BONNIE PARKER Well, you take this purse and open it up and wish right into every year on August 1st, and your wish will come true.
FLORA DUPLAY HILL How do you know, ma’am?
BONNIE PARKER You see, Miss DuPlay, if I hadn’t have dropped this purse, you wouldn’t have stopped me, and that mean old sheriff that just drove by would have arrested me. (winks) So, that purse is lucky indeed. Now, tell me again which way is that diner?
FLORA DUPLAY HILL POINTS down the street.
BONNIE PARKER Well, thank you, honey. (starts to walk away in the opposite direction) You take care, Miss DuPlay. And, don’t forget to make those wishes.
A car SPEEDS down the street, STOPS in front of BONNIE PARKER, and she CLIMBS in. FLORA DUPLAY HILL WATCHES the car SPEED away.
